CloudAccel is excited to announce the successful roll-out of “Cross-cloud Autoscale” that supports AWS, Azure, and GCP (with support for more cloud providers coming in the future).

Challenge

One of the applications in a customer environment needed autoscale support on multiple cloud providers.

This application had services that required pre-scale-up configuration, and pre-scale-down de-listing.

Life cycle events offered by some cloud providers as part of their autoscale service can help, but not all cloud providers support autoscale lifecycle events.

CloudAccel Solutions

CloudAccel provided a custom solution that can dynamically scale services across multiple clouds.

Its design enables supporting more clouds without requiring changes to the application.

The solution offers hooks for custom processing during various stages,

thereby allowing fine-grained control of scale-up and scale-down process. The solution helped solve the dual requirements of being cross-cloud enabled as well as scale-up and scale-down customization.

Alternatives

Other alternatives would have required setting up of autoscale for each cloud provider. Autoscale services of each cloud provider have different configuration options. Keeping them in sync during setup and maintenance phases would have been a herculean task. In addition, not all cloud providers offer support for lifecycle events. Another option would have been to not have autoscale and run the services at peak capacity 24x7. This would have driven up the cloud usage costs by consuming cloud resources during off-peak idle hours.
